Do you need to exchange USD dollars to local BZD dollars?
Exchange is not necessary; all vendors/stores accept US currency at the controlled government exchange rate of USD$ 1.00 to BZD$ 2.00. It is recommended to have some cash with you for small payments, such as taxi or purchases to small local vendors, who only take cash. We advise that you make sure the bills are not distorted or they won’t be accepted. Some places only take cash, but most take credit cards.
Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted, a few places accept Amex and Discover. Most restaurants take credit cards and frequently a credit card processing fee is added to the transaction. Also some credit cards companies may add additional international transaction fees, so it is advisable to check with your card provider for details about your card. It is advisable to notify your credit card company or bank that you will be traveling, so your transaction is not declined. Frequently, a minimum of BZD$20.00 is required to run a credit card charge. The Green House offers a discount for purchases over a USD$100.00. You need to ask for this discount.
Where do we buy food?
If you would like to order provisions for your vacation, you can do so at www.matagrandegrocery.com. Tammy and Justin do a fabulous job of making sure your condo is stocked before you arrive. Keep in mind that most items cost more in Belize than what you pay at home, so shopping at the airport duty-free store and bringing your favorite dry goods such as peanut butter and granola bars, can be convenient and more economical. A welcome meal is also recommended and we can help you arrange this. One of our cooks can prepare a delicious Belizean meal that will be ready in your condo at your arrival or later in the day. You may also schedule additional meals for your stay with our conceirge. Please advise us of any specialty dietary needs when making the reservation. There are a number of grocery stores in town that you can stop and shop, before coming North to Indigo, or you can take your cart to town, as most guests do.
Breakfast typically serves from 6:00-10:00 am, Lunch serves from 12:00-3:00 pm, and Dinner typically starts at 6:00 pm; it is advisable to make a reservation with restaurants that you are keen on visiting. Meals are difficult to get between lunch and dinner, appetizers are usually available during those hours.

What are the risks at Ambergris Caye?
In Belize, the sun is directly overhead and much stronger than most tourists are accustomed to, so sunburn is the greatest risk. We recommend to bring lots of sunscreen and reapply often. Sun hats and rash guards can also be a great help.
Mosquitoes and bug bites: Bug spray is recommended, especially around foliage and after rain. Typically the risk near the beach is low, as long as, the sea breeze is present.
Petty theft: Do not leave valuables or belongings unattended on the beach or in town. Indigo is 4.5 Miles from San Pedro, in the safe, quiet, and tranquil Mata Grande neighborhood. We have full-time day employees and night security for added safety. Our island vibe is laid back, dress is casual and flip-flops is your daily accessory, so it is advisable to leave your valuables such as gold, diamonds, and jewels at your home, since there is little need for them here.
We are traveling with children, is there any concern?
Children can do just about everything there is to do in Belize, we have many families visit our country and partake in all sorts of activities. Our concierge will gladly give you recommendations on family activities.
A note from the U.S. embassy, “U.S. citizens traveling with minor children may be asked by immigration officials to show U.S. birth certificates for each child. When children are not traveling with both parents, immigration officials often request signed documentation to establish the children are traveling with the permission of both parents. Such documentation may include notarized letters from the parent(s), custody or adoption papers, and death certificates in situations where one or both parents are deceased.” If you are traveling with your children and both parents are not present U.S. immigration may request a notarized document giving permission for the child to travel. Please be sure to check with the U.S. embassy and have the required documents before arriving at your international airport in the U.S.
Are there restrictions for people with disabilities?
Generally speaking, Belize is not well equipped for persons that are disabled. However, if you are not wheelchair bound, you should be fine. On Ambergris Caye, many roads are roughly paved and golf carts are the main mode of transportation, so this is something to consider. A few places may have entry ramps, but mostly it's steps.
Protect our reef, our waters, and our way of life. When traveling to Belize please bring or purchase reef safe sunscreen and natural bug spray. Help us keep our country beautiful for generations to come, so your children and ours will enjoy its natural beauty, as we have.
